“A well-trained mind brings happiness; an untrained mind brings suffering.”It is a Buddhist teaching that true happiness comes from controlling the mind ( Cittam damtam sukhawaham ).A well-trained mind is freed from desires, lust, anger, and delusion, leading to peace and wisdom. In contrast, an untrained mind struggles and becomes enslaved to emotions.
Training the mind for happiness, according to Buddhist principles:
- Good thoughts (intelligence): This involves training the mind to think good thoughts, having a selfless spirit, and being generous.
- Self-control (morality): This refers to protecting the mind from falling into lustful emotions, or having the five precepts as a foundation.
- Straighten the mind (concentration): Wise people straighten their minds like arrow makers straighten arrows, in order to escape the snares of Mara.
